Information about VOIP

We've all heard about friends or family members who are a bit more adventurous than ourselves taking the plunge into digital phone service. Getting started is fairly easy for anyone with a computer and broadband Internet connection. But, many who prefer to resist trends find themselves wondering what exactly is involved in digital service and what kind of voip equipment requirements are there.

VOIP, for those that are unaware, simply means Voice Over Internet Protocol. This is a fancy way of saying this type of phone service uses Internet cables, rather than phone lines to send and receive calls. As this type of service expands in popularity, the quality and reliability users are finding is also improving. Many report as good or better service than they received from a regular telephone. The voip equipment requirements, however, can make the real difference.

Let’s take a look at the basic voip equipment requirements most services will involve for getting started in using digital phone service:

  • A computer. Since the computer serves as the main voip equipment hub, it's important to have a fairly good one with a capacity to get on the Internet. While a top of the line machine isn't needed, a reliable one will be.
  • A broadband connection. The point of digital phone service is using cable lines, rather than phone lines, to place calls. Inasmuch, a broadband connection is an absolute must on the list of voip equipment requirements.
  • Ethernet card. A computer must have one of these to tap into a broadband connection. If you have a cable model, chances are you already have an Ethernet card, so you should be set on this requirement.
  • VOIP service provider. The number of these is ever on the rise with bigger and bigger companies coming on board all the time. To make the service work, you have to sign up or sign on with one of these providers. This particular voip equipment requirement can be the trickiest. As this service develops, the choices in good companies are rather extensive.

The above are the absolute basics needed in voip equipment, but there are others some services might offer or even require. This will depend on how much flexibility in phone service is offered or desired. The "optional" equipment list include:

  • Specialized phone. Some service providers offer this piece of voip equipment to help their users enjoy regular calling features. These phones work in conjunction with the service, but enable dialing like a person would on any regular phone.
  • Phone adapters. Some service providers can offer their clients the ability to make any and every phone in their house voip capable. These adapters are thought of as pretty important pieces of voip equipment by those who don't want to give up having a phone in every room in their homes.

Getting started with a digital phone service is pretty easy. As long as you have the basic voip equipment requirements in your home, i.e., the computer and the cable hook up, you should be set.
